Dabar Scott, 43, was spotted by the officer, who alerted deputies from the sheriff's office about a suspected drunk driver at around 1:45 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18 on Joshua Road, officials said.
The officer had reported seeing a Toyota stopped in the middle of the road with its driver slumped over the wheel, with the vehicle still in drive, and the only thing preventing it from moving being the driver’s foot resting on the brake.
According to a spokesperson from the sheriff's office, thinking quickly, the off-duty officer and responding deputies boxed in the car to prevent a potential escape if the driver woke up, then were able to get inside the vehicle and shift it into park - all while Scott remained asleep.
Once the driver was roused, deputies noticed the strong smell of alcohol, along with his slurred speech and glassy, bloodshot eyes, authorities reported.
Scott was ultimately arrested on charges of driving under the influence, stopping on a roadway, and refusal to submit to testing.
Due to his level of intoxication, the man was initially unable to participate in a bond hearing and was held at Rappahannock Regional Jail until further notice, police said on Tuesday morning.
"Thank you to the off-duty officer for your assistance taking another drunk driver off of Stafford County’s roads," officials said. "Remember, drive sober or get pulled over."
